Swimming
activities and water safety are an important and compulsory part of the
physical education national curriculum. All pupils must be taught the
knowledge, skills & understanding for swimming activities and water safety.
These two new packs from Primrose Education, created by Penny Riley, should
form an essential part of your school's PE resource facilities, to help
ensure you and your pupils have a clear understanding of safety in or near
the water. The Water Safety Pack is intended for all ages - it is advisable to begin teaching a knowledge of water safety at KS 1 and by KS 2 pupils must be taught the codes of hygiene and rules for safe bathing at the pool. The Basic Rescue Skills Pack is intended for KS2 pupils and helps pupils to recognise basic types of swimming distress, learn safe rescue sequences and identify potential dangers. The packs have been designed for interactive 'hands-on' use in the classroom and at the pool. Each pack contains a (photocopiable) sequence of twenty four A4-illustrations of progressive problem-based water and poolside situations which the pupils are encouraged to assess in a variety of ways e.g. question & answer, discussion, identification of dangers. Each illustration is accompanied by notes for use by the teacher, to help the class gain a full understanding of the importance of the topic. View sample text from the Water Safety Pack here ...
